Mask Making

At Artistic Impressions, when we're not in the garden, we're sewing masks for our community. You can sew a simple mask using these instructions that I've created (basic sewing skills are helpful). The elastic straps can be swapped out with bias tape or ribbon ties.

Mask

A) Cut 2 pieces of fabric: 9-1/2” x 7-1/2” outer layer and 6-1/2” x 7-1/4” inner layer

B) Cut 2 pieces of 1/2” elastic: head loop 16” long and neck loop 11” long

C) Pin and sew 6-1/2” inner layer to the top edge of 9-1/2” outer layer using 1/4” seam, right sides together.

D) Repeat for bottom edge. It will not lay flat.

E) Turn and press.

F) Create 3 accordion pleats through both layers, press.

G) Turn in scant 1/2” along one edge, then turn in again to enclose raw edge on one side to create a casing. Press. Repeat on other edge.

F) Place 11” neck loop elastic into right side casing - pin. Place other end of elastic into the left side casing. Now place 16” head loop elastic into right side casing and place other end into right side casing. Make sure the elastic is not twisted. (Bias tape or ribbon may be used in place of the elastic straps).

G) Sew a rectangle to close the casing, secure the neck loop elastic by stitching back and forth several times, top stitch the outside edge and finally secure the head loop elastic by stitching back and forth several times.

H) Finished :)
